Finding the BEST veggie “fish” and chips in Devon and Cornwall
I live in the South West (Devon specifically, although I have family in Cornwall and visit a lot) and while I love the coast, the sea air, and a proper chippy dinner, there’s one small challenge: I’m vegetarian. I don’t eat fish – but I still want to enjoy the classic fish and chips – or as close as I can, at least!
So, over the last few years, I’ve been on a mission to find the best vegetarian-friendly version across Devon and Cornwall.
I’m not talking about generic battered halloumi or a sad side of chips – I’ve been after something that really tries to replicate the original in look, feel, and taste.
Here’s how the search is going so far (I will be updating this as I go!)
Harbour Lights, Falmouth
This one came recommended – it is always at the top of the list when you search for “vegetarian fish and chips Cornwall’ – and it’s great to see a proper chippy making an effort with a plant-based “tofish”.
The portion was generous and came with all the usual extras.
The texture, though, was a bit off – more spongey than flaky – and the flavour wasn’t particularly close to fish. It did taste like what it is – battered tofu.
Still, it’s nice to see something different to the usual veggie burger option!
Blue Peter Inn, Polperro
I love this pub and am always singing their praises on Facebook!
So I was delighted when I visited and discovered that yes – they do veggie fish and chips. It was even more welcome as I’d just finished the South West Coast Path hike from Looe!
The vegan fish and chips here were seriously tasty – a crisp batter, well-seasoned, and served hot with chunky chips.
It’s also a lovely place to sit in.
The prices were fair, and I’d happily go back for this one!
Land & Sea, Exmouth
Land & Sea is a new restaurant that’s opened in Exmouth in the last year, and as soon as I saw they offered veggie fish and chips, I booked a table!
This was a winner.
They use banana blossom, and the texture was excellent – soft but not soggy.
The batter was light, and there was even a touch of that salty, sea-like flavour.
My partner had the classic cod and chips and agreed mine was surprisingly close to his. Always a good sign!
The Cove, Hope Cove
Another banana blossom version – this one massive. If you’re hungry, it’s good value for money. But the batter was on the thick side and quite greasy, which made it heavier than the others.
Still enjoyable, just not quite balanced – and The Cove’s atmosphere is lovely.
I’m still on the hunt. If you’ve had a good veggie fish and chips somewhere in the South West, I’d love to hear about it – drop your recommendations in the comments!
