Hello, I’m Claire!

Hi, my name’s Claire Martin and I’m a West Country local!

My roots go far, far back in Cornwall (I’ve traced them to the 13th century) where most of my ancestors were Cornish miners but there is one tenuous link to the Tremaynes (who own the Lost Gardens of Heligan!).

As an adult, I’ve lived in Bristol for six years, Bath for one, and I’ve settled in the town of Exmouth in Devon since 2020.

I’ve hiked most of the South West Coast Path and spend my free times exploring different towns and villages around the region.

My blog offers genuine local tips, uncovered by my extensive experience living in and travelling around the region.

Exmouth Tours

Recently, I’ve started a tour company in Exmouth, Exmouth Tours.

Its pioneer tour is a walking tour focusing on the town’s history.

I’ve amassed some fantastic five-star reviews on TripAdvisor and will be rerunning the tours in summer 2024.

I hope to ultimately expand this tour company to the rest of East Devon, using Exmouth as a base!

My background

My love for the South West of England is rooted deep in family history that traces back to (at least) 14th-century Cornwall. I’ve even managed to trace my ancestry back to Sampson Tremayne, who was Cornish gentry!

Then there’s the legacy of Cornish mining and pasty-making.

The family narrative takes a twist with my gran, a passionate Cornish woman, crossing the River Tamar and settling in Exmouth, East Devon.

My childhood involved family trips to see my gran in Exmouth and diving deeper into family history in Cornwall.

As an adult, I attended the University of the West of England in Bristol and had a stint living in Bath.

Since 2020, I’ve settled in Exmouth – it’s the perfect place to keep exploring Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, and Somerset while sharing these experiences through my blog.
