Truro is Cornwall’s only city and its county town. While it’s certainly not the most popular holiday destination in the county, it’s arguably the best place to visit in Cornwall for Cornish culture, and its central location means that it is easy to reach lots of other Cornwall attractions.
There are a few things to do in Truro city, including a guided or self-guided tour, its majestic cathedral, and the contemporary Lemon Street Market. You can also easily enjoy the River Fal from here, as well as numerous cycle routes that are reachable on two wheels from the city centre.
And of course, there are a lot of places to visit near Truro. It’s close to both coasts, meaning villages like Mousehole and Port Isaac are both in reach, as well as attractions like St Michael’s Mount, Minack Theatre and Pendennis Castle, and if you fancy a hike, Bodmin Moor is just a short drive.
All of this means that Truro is one of the best places to stay in Cornwall, particularly if you want to see another side of the county that isn’t just beachy towns, or if you are on a road trip around Cornwall. The best places to stay in Truro: a run down
Truro Centre
Truro centre is hardly a metropolis, but there are some urban attractions in the city centre. Truro Cathedral is the only one of its kind in the whole of Cornwall, and it has stunning architecture; it is a striking landmark of the city and well worth visiting.
To learn more about culture, the Royal Cornwall Museum is also fascinating. There are also many eating, drinking, and shopping opportunities in Truro, including the fantastic Lemon Street Market.
And of course, the centre has an easy to reach the train station. If you are visiting Cornwall without a car, it might be prudent to stay in Truro centre as there are direct trains from London, Exeter and Plymouth and you can take trains from here to other destinations. Truro has direct rail links to Penzance, Falmouth and St Erth (5 miles from St Ives).
Hotels in Truro centre are typically cosy Cornish inns and guesthouses, although there are a few luxury hotels as well.

Where to stay near Truro: Carnon Downs
Carnon Downs is a small village about 3 miles from Truro centre. Truro isn’t a hectic city, but if you are wondering where to stay in Truro and would rather opt for somewhere a little more rural, Carnon Downs is a great option.
There are a few pubs in Carnon Downs, including Punchbowl and Ladle and Old Quay Inn, and from the village, you can easily walk to Restronguet Creek and the Fal River’s Loe Beach.
And of course, Truro isn’t far away – around an hour’s walk or you can take the U1 or 36 bus, or drive into the city in less than 10 minutes.
Chycara
Chycara is a tranquil property offering apartments and chalets with lovely views over the natural scenery. You’ll be able to enjoy plenty of nature strolls around the area, as well as a swimming pool, with a sauna and wellness centre. Places to stay near Truro: Malpas
Malpas is a Truro favourite. Located at the confluence of the Truro River and Tresillian River, it’s another rural spot out of the city. From here you can look back into Truro and see the stunning cathedral, especially during sunset. You can enjoy riverside walks here; check out Boscawen Garden which is on the way to Truro. The Heron Inn is a lovely Riverside Pub that’s perfect for drinks or dinner.
As Malpas is right by the river, it is slightly more disconnected than Carnon Downs – which can be a good or bad thing!
Malpas is about the same distance as Carnon Downs to Truro. It will take around 45 minutes to walk and 8 minutes to drive to the city, or you can take the 496 bus.
Fal River Cottage
Fal River Cottage is a two bedroom house with a kitchen, a dining area, a lounge and bathroom. It also has a luxurious patio with views of the River Fal.
