Dawlish’s hidden beach is PERFECT for sunny Devon days
Just a short distance from the town of Dawlish, Coryton Cove is popular amongst Devon wild swimmers’ group chats as one of the top beaches in the area for calm waters and chilled out vibes!
Here’s everything you need to know about this wonderful Devon beach.
Where is Coryton Cove?
Coryton Cove is a small, sheltered beach in Dawlish, located just to the east of the town’s main beach.
Beyond the railway line, it’s one of South Devon’s quieter seaside spots – and arguably one of its most scenic!
How to Get to Coryton Cove
Coryton Cove is easily accessible on foot from Dawlish town centre, about a 10-minute walk along the seafront (Google Maps location).
The route follows the Dawlish sea wall.
If you put “Coryton Cove” into your sat nav, it’ll take you to a country lane above the beach (here). This means you need to walk down the cliffs to reach it – but the perk of driving here is that there’s free parking on the road.
You could also park in Dawlish Town Centre, but free spaces are harder to come by there!
Arriving by train? Dawlish Station is the nearest stop.
What to Do at Coryton Cove
Coryton Cove is best known for its chilled out atmosphere!
The cove’s red sand and calm waters make it ideal for paddling and sunbathing – it’s a lovely place for a swim, but it is not lifeguarded so you do dip at your own risk.
Its sheltered location means it’s often warmer and less windy than more exposed beaches nearby.
The beach is backed by a row of traditional beach huts – you can even hire these on a long-term lease if you’re local!
The South West Coast Path runs nearby (although not actually on the beach) and leads to Dawlish Warren in one direction and Teignmouth in the other.
The railway line also runs past Coryton Cove, so it’s perfect for any trainspotters!
Facilities and Amenities
Coryton Cove is more secluded than Dawlish’s main beach, so facilities are limited.
But The Cove Café serves up tasty drinks and snacks!
There are also toilets.
For more options, the main seafront at Dawlish has cafés, pubs, and shops, just a short walk away.
Got a four-legged friend? Dogs are welcome on the beach all year round, unlike other destinations in Devon.
Best Time to Visit
Coryton Cove is a fantastic spot year-round, though it’s at its best in spring and summer. Of course, in peak summer season, it can be busy – but generally Dawlish is quieter than other destinations in South Devon, and some visitors who come to Dawlish don’t even know that Coryton exists!
But because of its sheltered location, it can still be pleasant in autumn and winter! Visit on a crisp, sunny day if you can – the colour of the water is mesmerising!
Coryton Cove is one of Dawlish’s best beaches – you can’t miss it if you’re spending time exploring the town! See more top things to do in Dawlish here.
