Where to work remotely in Devon

There’s no doubt about it, remote work has taken the world by storm.

With more and more businesses offering hybrid or fully remote contracts and ample opportunities to make money online for entrepreneurs, working from anywhere has never been so frequent.

But this does nothing to address the loneliness epidemic that many remote workers struggle with. I work remotely, and love the community a co-working space gives me.

It means I get out the house each day and has been the catalyst in meeting people in a relatively new town!

Here’s where to work remotely in Devon.

Cafes and public spaces

Cafes and libraries often offer WiFi under set terms.

For cafes, a purchase is essential – and if you’re there for longer than an hour, multiple purchases may be required. Libraries have free internet access, but you foten need to be a member and sometimes it’s limited to just a few hours.

Public WiFi can also be non-secure, so I’d highly recommend a VPN if you’re going down this route. You can use this link to try a VPN for free.

Devon Libraries offer internet access in their spaces for work or study. Not all libraries have toilets, and they can be small so aren’t ideal for calls or meetings.

I’d always recommend supporting independent cafes first, but you’ll need to check with each individual cafe about whether they can cater for remote workers. Generally chains like Costa, Cafe Nero and Starbucks don’t mind people on their laptops for an hour or two.

Wetherspoons also has free internet and it’s very unlikely you’ll be asked to move on in the day time!

Coworking spaces in Devon

That said, I would always recommend a coworking space. This is for various reasons:

  • you’ll have access to call pods and meeting rooms
  • you’ll meet a community of people
  • there are often social events
  • you’ll never be asked to move along!
  • you can usually have a fixed desk
  • the WiFi is secure

Rates vary, but are usually around £18 for a hot desk for a day or £280 for a fixed desk for a month in Devon.

Here are the best coworking spaces in Devon:

Propeller, Exmouth

This is my coworking space, so obviously it was going to be number one!

Propeller is a buzzing community space with creatives and tech pros. One thing that makes it so special is that it’s volunteer-run, operated by a group of people who wanted to give Exmouth a thriving community space.

It has the best community out of any coworking space I’ve been to (and I’ve visited a lot!), with a few events each month – anything from pints in the pub over the road to paddleboarding in the summer to games nights.

It’s a huge space with coworking, fixed desks and offices. Then, there’s a communal area with ping pong, table football and darts!

Generator, Exeter

Exeter Quayside, Devon

Sitting on the historic Exeter Quay, Generator is a large, airy coworking space with private offices and meeting rooms.

There’s an industrial-style open plan office, with hot desk, fixed desk or offices available. Regular networking opportunities and socials ensure that the community stays connected, and local businesses are championed.

LUMA – Ilfracome Work Hub, Ilfracombe

Ilfracombe is a small North Devon town, but it has a wonderful space for start ups!

LUMA is funded by Devon County Council and hosted by Ilfracombe Town Council and consists of five offices and a hot desking area. It was designed to help start ups in the area with an affordable space to operate from and networking opportunities.

Regenworks, Totnes

Situated in the Granary of Dartington Hall, three miles from the quirky town of Totnes, Regenworks is a light and airy workspace.

As it’s situated away from the town, it has a sense of peace and solitude, but there’s a cafe, restuarant and pub right by the space.

It’s perfect for local freelancers or small businesses who want to work in gorgeous surroundings!

The Nook, Cullompton

Over in Mid Devon, The Nook is a converted truck-building factory turned co-working space!

Ideal for small businesses or freelancers, it has flexible desk space and private offices, with meeting and training rooms, a games area and lounge.

If you’re working remotely in the Cullompton area and want to meet other profesionaks, The Nook is the place to be!
