Devon’s nostalgic cliff railway that leads to the beach
A scenic journey that’s reminiscent of traditional seaside holidays, Babbacombe Cliff Railway is a must-add to your South West bucket list.
Here’s everything you need to know about using it!
Where is Babbacombe Cliff Railway?
Babbacombe Cliff Railway is located in (as the name suggests) Babbacombe, a coastal area of Torquay on the South Devon coast.
It connects Babbacombe Downs with Oddicombe Beach., a rather steep incline!
A Brief History of the Railway
Opened in 1926, Babbacombe Cliff Railway was designed to give easy access to Oddicombe Beach – which was a popular seaside destination at the time.
Built using a funicular system, it operates with two cars that counterbalance each other on the tracks (so they must both run at the same time).
The railway played a key role in Torquay’s tourism boom in the early 20th century. D
uring World War II, it was briefly closed but reopened after the war and has been in near-continuous operation since.
In the early 2000s, the railway faced closure due to maintenance issues, but thanks to local efforts and funding, it was fully restored and continues to be one of Devon’s most popular historic attractions.
What It’s Like to Ride the Babbacombe Cliff Railway
“It’s just wonderful” a lady said to the railway staff as she exited the railway.
After that review, I climbed eagerly into the carriage, taking in the sweeping views of Oddicombe Beach.
I was the only rider on my journey, so was able to fully take in the bright blue sea and golden sands as I descended the steep 220-metre track.
I enjoyed stunning views over Oddicombe Beach and the blue waters of Lyme Bay.
The experience is especially rewarding on clear days when you can see across the bay towards Teignmouth and beyond!
Once at the bottom, I stepped out onto Oddicombe Beach, a mix of sand and shingle, backed by red cliffs.
Oddicombe Beach
Oddicombe Beach is a charming spot that’s not as busy as other English Riviera Beaches.
The area is sheltered, making it a great spot for swimming, sunbathing – or simply relaxing!
There’s also a café and beach shop near the station, where you can grab refreshments before heading back up.
Operating hours and ticket prices
The railway usually runs from February to November, though exact opening times can vary (check the website for up-to-date opening times).
In winter, the railway usually closes for maintenance.

How to Get There
Babbacombe Cliff Railway is easily accessible from Torquay town centre, which is about two miles away.
If you’re driving, parking is available near Babbacombe Downs, though spaces can fill up quickly in summer.
Alternatively, the 22 bus runs from Torquay to Babbacombe.
The railway is on the South West Coast Path too!
Other ways to reach Oddicombe Beach
The cliff railway is definitely the most fun way to get to Oddicombe Beach, but you can also reach it by car or on foot!
Just be aware – the road is rather windy and is quite the incline when you’re walking up. You might want to walk down and take the railway back up the cliff!
Best Time to Visit
Spring and summer are the best times to visit if you want to enjoy Oddicombe Beach at the bottom of the railway.
However, autumn is also pleasant, with fewer crowds and dramatic coastal views. Double check the railway is open though!
The railway is usually closed in the winter (in 2025, it re-opened on February 15th).
For a mix of history, scenic views, and easy beach access, Babbacombe Cliff Railway is a must-visit when in Torquay!
