This Torbay cove was a favourite of Agatha Christie!

Sitting quietly between Torquay and Babbacombe, Antsy’s Cove is backed by steep red cliffs and surrounded by wooded slopes.

The beach is small and pebbly, with water that turns deep blue on a sunny day and remains sheltered even when the wind picks up elsewhere along the coast.

The South West Coast Path runs above the cove – it doesn’t actually go to the cover – but you can detour down the steep path to reach the beach itself.

About Antsey’s Cove

Antsey’s Cove is a charming, tucked away Torbay Beach (Google Maps location here). It’s a climb down from the South West Coast Path and the car park, but it’s worth it!

It was a favourite beach of Agatha Christie – so you’re in good company!

Is there a café at Anstey’s Cove?

Yes, there is a café right above the beach!

Anstey’s Cove Café is a simple, traditional beach café offering breakfasts, light lunches, teas, coffees and ice creams.

Seating spills out onto the beach during warmer months, giving you the option to eat and drink with a view of the water.

The café typically operates from spring to early autumn – opening times can vary depending on the weather, so it’s worth checking ahead if you are visiting early or late in the season.

Can you swim at Anstey’s Cove?

The calm conditions at Anstey’s Cove make it a popular spot for swimming – but it’s important to be mindful of the conditions.

The pebbles give way quickly to deeper water, so you don’t have to wade far to swim properly. Paddleboarding and kayaking are also common here on calm days.

There are no lifeguards on duty, although there is lifesaving equipment on the beach. It’s vital that you assess the conditions before entering the water and only venture into the water if you’re confident.

What facilities are available at Anstey’s Cove?

Facilities at Anstey’s Cove are basic – but cover the essentials!

Public toilets are available near the café during the main season. The café provides refreshments and drinks.

Dogs are allowed on the beach.

Visit Anstey’s Cove responsibly

Anstey’s Cove is a small, natural space, and visitor impact can be high – particularly during summer.

If you visit, take all rubbish away with you, even biodegradable waste like food scraps (as these can damage wildlife).

Avoid climbing on the cliffs or disturbing any fenced-off areas – the coastal slopes are unstable and home to nesting seabirds.

Noise carries easily across the water, so keep music volumes low! If you bring a dog, ensure it is under control at all times and clean up after it without leaving bags behind.

Disposable barbecues are not permitted, as they risk damaging the landscape and starting fires.

If it’s open, I highly recommend supporting the local café during your visit!

How to get to Anstey’s Cove

Anstey’s Cove sits between Torquay and Babbacombe.

To reach it, follow Anstey’s Cove Road until you reach the small car park near the top. Google Maps location here.

From there, a steep footpath leads down to the beach.

Public transport options are limited, but buses run between Torquay town centre and Babbacombe.

From the bus stop, you will need to walk to the top of Anstey’s Cove Road and follow the signs. The path down is steep and may not be suitable for everyone.
